23 lessons I have learned throughout my 23 years of life (part 2)

As promised here is part two of the 2 part blog series, ’23 lessons I have learned throughout my 23 years of life.’

12. Give back.

We are called to be servants of the Lord. Matthew 25: 37- 40 reads, “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink?38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

When you go to the grocery store, instead of purchasing one bottle of water, buy two and give it someone in need. Do not give with the intention of receiving, but rather give from a willing heart.

13. Your body is the temple of the Lord.

The beginning of 1 Corinthians 6:19 reads “do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy spirit?” Now, I don’t know about you but temples are always beautiful to me. They are always being decorated and being maintained. Even in your personal dwelling space, you keep it nice and maintain it (I am assuming). Why not your body? Exercise, eat a balanced diet, drink your water, adorn it nicely, love the skin you’re in and honor God with your bodies.

14. Take care of the planet.

Have you ever stop and considered that you are very intertwined with the earth? You were created from it. “…. all come from dust and to dust all return” Ecclesiastes 3:20.  Your food is produced via the earth. When you plant and compost you are nourishing the soil in return. If you pollute the land, you are polluting your food source and ultimately yourself.

15. Smile more.

Many a day I was having a bad day and the smile of one friendly stranger did the job to brighten up my mood. You do not know the power a smile and laughter has. It spreads joy and positive energy that is majority of the time contagious. Smile more, it’s good for your environment.

16. Do not idolize things here on earth.

What did you bring into this world? You didn’t even bring yourself into this world. You sure not leaving with anything that you have acquired during your time here. Having stuff isn’t a bad thing but let them remain just that, stuff. Do not place your love in material things. Focus instead on the things that matters such as your loved ones, serving others, and creating new memories.

17. God’s way is the best way.

It took a few tries before I learned this lesson. I learnt it in career choices, and in relationships. If it is not done according to God’s word, it most certainly will not last.

18. Use your time wisely.

You have a limited amount of time. And the biggest factor is that you have no idea how limited it is. Your time here on earth is a gift from God, one that when it is used, it cannot be granted again. Choose wisely what you devote your time to. Make it count because it is very precious and a non-renewable resource that affects you more than anyone or anything else.

19. Be prepared.

It is better to be prepared and not have an opportunity than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.

20. Do not judge a book by its cover.

21. The storm only lasts for a while.

22. Pursue your passions.

Realizing your God-given purpose isn’t going to happen all at once. It is usually through pursuing different interests and seeing what you like and how you can serve God with it. Your life will almost feel empty when you do not pursue your passions. I pursued an interest of mine for three years until I got that door closed in my life. What that did for me is it allows me to be at peace knowing that I pursued it all the way to the end. I now have no regrets, no constant “what if’s” about that interest at all.

23. God loves you.

His word says it. If you are reading this, take this message to heart. God loves you so much that He made a way for you to live with Him in eternity. If you have not given your life to the Lord yet, I urge you to read the Gospels. For now, you can meditate on these verses:

  • If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:9-10.
  • 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17.

Bonus lesson

24. The best is yet to come.

Life isn’t over for me yet. There are many more lessons to learn, people to serve, places to go and things to see. I look forward to it all.

Aw such amazing advice! I love what you wrote about placing love in things other than material possessions 😀 also how you found little bible verses for each one! I love that you do not have to be of faith to find these so helpful, and that they are a great way in to finding faith too 😀 xx
